Serving Guide
Want an idea of what size cake to order?
An average cake is 3-4" tall and serving sizes can vary depending on your event. Taller cakes often have a cake board midway or between tiers so the cake is essentially made up of several average height cakes that are easier to carve and serve. Taller cakes also have dowels or straws as vertical support that you remove as you carve. Want a really impressive tiered cake but don't want a lot of actual cake? The rest of the tiers can be decorated styrofoam cake forms (food safe from specialty suppliers). Many wedding cakes are made like this. See below for approximate cake serving sizes and cutting guides.

Generous Servings: Approximately 3"x2" slices. Recommended for smaller cakes, or if only dessert is being served at your event and large servings are desired.
Standard/Party Servings: Approximately 2" x 2" slices. Recommended when ordering a party cake to feed a crowd. The more guests, the less likely everyone will want a generous slice of cake.
Large Event-Style Servings or Wedding-size Servings: Approximately 2"x1" slices. Recommended for after a meal or finger food. If only dessert is served, cut larger servings (Generous or Standard/Party Servings).
Cutting Guide

Cutting Tiered (including Very Tall) Cakes: Smaller tiered cakes - cut the from the top down. There's a cake board under each cake, which will tell you when to stop your knife. After those slices are gone, remove the cake board and start the next tier. Remove any wooden dowels or straw supports as you see them (they are hard to miss!). For taller tiered cakes, you may wish to remove the top tiers and cut them on the table.
Cutting Round Cakes (Event-Style Servings - see visual guide below): Move in two inches from the tier's outer edge; cut a ½ circle halfway around the cake and then slice 1 in. pieces within the circle on the cake's outer edge. Follow with the other side of the cake, making a second ½ circle and cutting the remaining 1” pieces on the outer edge. Now move in another 2 in., cut another circle, slice 1 in. pieces and so on until the tier is completely cut. The center core of each tier and the small top tier can be cut into 3rds, 4ths, and 6ths, depending on size.
Cutting Square Cakes (Event-Style Servings): Move in 2 in. from the outer edge and cut across. Then slice 1 in. pieces of cake. Now move in another 2 in. and slice again until the entire tier is cut.

Cutting 3D Sculpted Cakes: Just go for it! Anything goes...and an additional square/round/sheet cake can sometimes sit underneath or be served separately to increase servings or ease of serving.
